It’s okay to be different. To be unique. To be your own person. No need to follow a trend. No need to achieve greatness, but YES to doing your absolute best at whatever you’re doing. Kindness and sincerity are what attract me to my friends. Listening is my content. It wakes me up when I meet someone who is “that”. We’re in it together. Paying attention. Me to them. Them to me.
Turn the lights down, dimmer
See the skies sparkle, sweet simmer
On the daily-o
A tradition, after dinner wink
Might dose off for a sec, blink
In between satellite or meteor treks
Brain fire, kindled teachings
Love flows gently to my brain
Your content is my content train
I recently watched the movie Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love about Leonard Cohen and his love and muse, Marianne Ihlen. The title of the movie—coincidentally—happens to be the exact names and spellings of my father’s parents and my two oldest siblings, who I consider my sweet angels and believe, somehow, lead me to find this.
I’m a fan of Leonard Cohen’s poetry and have felt drawn to him from the very beginning of my writing. He’s just a regular person finding his own way, like you and me.
His writing exploded in to my world around the time I began to feel strong, healthy and inspired again, and I fell in love.
I chose lyrics from his song “Anthem” to use as a quote on the back cover of my very first book Sage Words that I feel embody the imperfection, vulnerability, hope and transcendence we experience throughout our lives while on our own personal journeys. A physical manifestation of a presence alive with an understanding of what’s possible.
There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.Leonard Cohen
My takeaway from him (and many, many artists over a lifetime) is this:
Exactly as you are.
No apologies, no excuses.
Our lives are constantly contracting and expanding. The cracks are nothing more than our own humanity. We all need the light to survive and thrive.
Find friends who have the same content in their souls as you and watch your worlds collide into magical wonder.
No need to worry
Got the good karma flurry
Good vibes billowing
New day readied
God, the universe, your angels… they got you. When you love something, whether it be poetry, painting, photography, music, science, geology, oceans… love without abandon. Watch your imagination unfold. The things you can—and will—create are endless.
